Jackfruit is a gigantic edible and delicious fruit.  We discovered jackfruit when we decided to purchase it out of sheer curiosity at our local Asian supermarket.

Facts:

  • Jackfruit grows abundantly and is said to be a potential solution to world hunger.
  • Jackfruit is a perennial that grows on jackfruit trees.
  • Each tree can bear over 200 fruit.
  • It is the largest fruit in the world that grows on trees.
  • One fruit can weigh up to 30kg or over 65 lbs.
  • There are up to 500 edible bulbs in each jackfruit.
  • The seeds in the jackfruit bulbs can be dried and consumed as well.

Tips:

  • When preparing the fruit, wear gloves to protect your hands from the fruit’s natural latex.
  • Apply coconut oil to your hands and knife to make clean up easier.
  • Buy a fraction of the fruit to make it a manageable treat for smaller families.

Remove the membranes which surround each edible bulb.
The seed can also be used.
Each bulb contains a seed which can be dried and eaten in curries, stews and used as a substitute for lentils.

My family gives jackfruit two thumbs up, maybe yours will too!
